Laganas' main road runs past the door, and the beach is fifty metres down it — two minutes on foot, past the taxi rank and the shops. Tzante Hotel is four rooms above that: a family-run stop with a front desk that will book you a boat to Marathonisi or the Keri caves. The rooms run from simple to recently refinished: Superior doubles and triples with tiled floors and a balcony, and Premium rooms above them with wood-toned bathrooms, a walk-in rain shower and a Nespresso machine by the bed. Views split three ways — mountain, sea, garden — depending which side of the building you land on. Four rooms in total, which means the pool and the snack bar beside it rarely feel crowded. Breakfast is laid with local produce each morning in the restaurant; past midday, the same pool-side tables serve cocktails and whatever dish the kitchen settled on.

Breakfast is local produce, laid each morning in the restaurant. By midday the same tables round the pool turn into a snack bar, serving dishes and cocktails through the afternoon.
Boats to Marathonisi and the Keri caves leave from the beach, fifty metres down the road. The water between here and there is part of the National Marine Park, so a loggerhead turtle surfacing beside you is not unusual — give it room. Back at the hotel it's a two-minute walk to the pool bar.
Laganas' beaches are protected nesting ground for the loggerhead turtle Caretta Caretta and habitat for the Mediterranean monk seal. Swim early enough in season and the water is often theirs before it's anyone else's.
