H The Coleridge Rooms & prices

The Coleridge occupies a townhouse of the early 1600s on Old Bakery Street, deep in the honey-coloured grid of Valletta, Malta's walled baroque capital. It is a house of six suites rather than a hotel of corridors, an adults-only stay for guests eighteen and over who want the old city on their doorstep and quiet stone rooms to return to. Behind a plain street door lie vaulted ceilings, hand-painted murals and a roof terrace above the rooftops, the whole place given over to two people at a time rather than a crowd.

Each of the six suites is dressed differently, so no two stays repeat: patterned wallpapers and painted walls in ochre, teal and deep green, antique chests and mirrors, walnut floors and the bare golden limestone of the original building overhead. Some rooms carry a dramatic mural above the bed or a freestanding bath under a stone vault; all keep individually controlled air conditioning, soft lighting and the hush of thick old walls.

The Coleridge sets a minimum age of 18 in its own house rules, read on 11 August 2026. A house whose rule drops below eighteen, or stops naming an age, is taken off HUSH — how every house is checked.

The six suites

Every suite is its own composition. One is crowned by a vaulted ceiling of raw stone with a painted mural of Leda filling the wall behind the bed and a rolltop bath standing on the marble floor; others turn on ochre walls, floral wallpaper or a traditional patterned-tile floor. Antique writing desks, velvet chairs and mirrors are set against modern beds and walnut boards, so the seventeenth-century house and its contemporary comforts share the same room.

A house of 1600

The building dates from the early seventeenth century, and the restoration left its bones on show. Sitting rooms open under broad stone arches and barrel vaults of bare Maltese limestone, with a lounge area that doubles as a work space, an antique table set for tea and a small kitchenette tucked beneath the beams. The result feels less like a room booked for a night than a corner of an old Valletta palazzo lent to you for the week.

Our tips

The hot tub on the roof terrace

The top suites open onto private roof terraces, and the highest of them has a hot tub for four set out among the rooftops, with the Valletta skyline and its church domes in view. Take a glass of wine up at dusk when the limestone turns gold.

St John's Co-Cathedral, 5 min

Five minutes' walk away stands St John's Co-Cathedral, its plain facade hiding a gilded baroque interior and two Caravaggio canvases. Go at opening time to have the side chapels almost to yourself before the cruise groups arrive.

Upper Barrakka Gardens

A ten-minute stroll south brings you to the Upper Barrakka Gardens, a shaded colonnade of arches on the bastions with a sweeping view over the Grand Harbour and the Three Cities. Time it for noon and you will catch the saluting-battery cannon fired below.

Day boat to Comino's Blue Lagoon

From the Valletta waterfront, boats run out to Comino and the turquoise Blue Lagoon, roughly an hour by fast ferry. Set off early and you can swim the clear shallows before the midday crowds fill the little bay.
