Seafort Luxury Hideaway was built in 2004 right at that edge, its three staggered levels catching the light off Whiddy Island, Bantry Bay and the Beara Peninsula beyond. Inside, the house is concrete floor and wall, geothermal heat underfoot, and doors and windows double-glazed against the weather. The 2016 renovation kept the finish plain rather than dressing it up, and the terrace does the rest of the work: west-facing, running the length of the house, with Whiddy Island, Bantry Bay and the Beara Peninsula laid out beyond the glass. Five rooms sit across three staggered levels, each stepped back to keep its own share of the light. It is not remote — Bantry's restaurants and shops are a mile's walk — but the inlet keeps its own quiet, with Donemark Falls the loudest thing nearby. Whiddy Island, within sight of the terrace, is where Sean's own grandfather was born.

Steps from the house, a flagged terrace opens straight onto the inlet, with a pergola, soft outdoor seating and a barbecue set against the water. This is where the day slows down — morning coffee with the herons feeding a few metres off, an evening glass as the light drops behind Whiddy Island. The birdlife is close and constant: swans and egrets, oystercatchers working the tideline, and now and then a white-tailed sea eagle overhead.
Every room at Seafort faces the bay, and several are shaped around the view — a bed set below a triangular gable window that frames the islands, a writing desk angled to the water, a pair of binoculars left on the sill. Wake to the tide and the birdsong, linger over coffee, then draw the curtains back on the Beara hills. The suites add floor-to-ceiling glass and a balcony where the morning comes with nothing between you and the sea.

The estuary sits right below the house, and Donemark Falls, reputedly where Ireland's first settlers came ashore, is a short paddle from the water's edge. Back to the outdoor fireplace once the light goes.
Bantry is a mile south, an easy walk for dinner among the town's award-winning restaurants and bars. West Cork is also farmers'-market country — stock up on artisan cheese, charcuterie and whatever the local delicatessens have that week before heading back to the fireplace.
Fifteen minutes by ferry from Bantry pier gets you to Whiddy Island, carpeted in red fuchsia along 7.7 kilometres of marked trail. The Bank House is the island's only pub — Kathleen or Tim will tell you about the French sailors who came ashore in 1796, and the redoubt the British Admiralty finished in 1809.
Bantry Bay's championship course sits just across the water from Seafort, close enough to call it next door. Further afield, the ferry to Garnish Island leaves from Glengarriff and stops at Seal Island, where a colony of some 250 harbour seals bask on the rocks before the boat carries on to the Italian Gardens.
