Behind a schoolhouse built in 1835 for the education of local children, down a quiet road in rural Co Kilkenny, three acres of garden run to woodland and wildflower meadow. At the end of it sits Desart School Garden Chalet: one room, adults only, with a double bed, a sofa that folds into a second, and a terrace looking over the grass. For anyone who wants a week with nothing scheduled but the birds at the feeder and the frogspawn in the pond.
Inside it is plain and warm: a fully equipped kitchen, a double bed, and a sofa that converts into a second one for the nights you want to spread out. Central heating and hot water run all day, and the fridge holds a few treats left for whoever is staying. The window looks past the terrace to grass and trees, and because there is only one room here, the garden outside it is never shared with anyone else's stay. Outside, meadowsweet flowers for its smell more than its shape, and by late summer the meadow is loud with bees and butterflies.
Desart School Garden Chalet sets a minimum age of 18 in its own house rules, written at desartschool.com, and read there on 11 August 2026. A house whose rule drops below eighteen, or stops naming an age, is taken off HUSH — how every house is checked.
The chalet is a self-catering house for two, finished throughout in honeyed pine that catches the low Irish light. The kitchen is properly equipped for cooking a real meal, the double bed sits beneath a painting of a wildflower field, and central heating with round-the-clock hot water keeps the single open room snug whatever the weather does outside.
The three-acre garden is managed for wildlife and it is yours to wander for as long as you stay. Mown paths thread through a wildflower meadow into a woodland walk that curves along the boundary, past a small pond that grows loud with frogs in spring. Birds, butterflies and the occasional shy hedgehog, squirrel or fox share the ground with you.

An old gate leads off the wildflower meadow onto a path that curves the edge of the three-acre garden. Follow it in spring for flowers pushing up through last year's leaves, or stop at the pond, where hundreds of tadpoles hatch from the spring's frogspawn.
The medieval city, with its castle and cathedrals, is a short drive from the chalet gate, and keeps a full run of bars, restaurants, theatres, cinemas and galleries. Back you go afterwards to the quiet of the garden and the terrace.
Youghal, the fishing town on the Waterford coast, is known for its seafood restaurants and makes a full day out. Back at the chalet, the kitchen is fully equipped for whatever you bring home, and there are a few treats already left in the fridge to start you off.
The wildflower meadow is at its best from midsummer on, loud with bees and butterflies drawn to the buddleia. Wild strawberries turn up in the grass around the same time, free to pick if you happen to be staying when they ripen.
