The older rooms keep their timber furniture and tiled floors and are none the worse for it. What all of them share is the balcony — a table, two chairs, and a view of rooftops or of the garden, which is where most mornings here begin.
Downstairs, the cafe-bar runs from mid-morning until eleven at night: coffee at the small round tables early on, cocktails once the light goes. It opens onto a balcony of its own, and alongside it are a library and a room with a projector where films are screened now and then. It is the sort of evening that only works in a house with no children in it.
