Each apartment here is closer to a small flat than a hotel room: a full kitchen — fridge, hob, oven, coffee machine, a washing machine tucked beside it — and an iron left out for whatever the flight creased. Floors throughout are tiled in azulejo, warmed from below by heating laid under the tile, so the cold months don't mean cold feet. The ground- and first-floor apartments sleep on twin beds behind a plain wardrobe; the top floor has a double bed, two sea-facing terraces already furnished, and a third that turns the full compass, two loungers already out on it. Nine apartments only, which is why the outdoor pool is never a contest for space. WIFI runs through every floor, and the minimarket on site covers whatever the kitchen still needs.

The best of the hotel is on the roof. A run of loungers lines the glass rail above the bay, angled at the water, and a swimming pool holds the sky behind them. Mornings are for laps and the long view down the coast; afternoons for a book, an umbrella and the sound of the beach far below.
From here the town falls away toward the water. The hotel sits at the top of the old fishing quarter, its terraces looking over red roofs, the church dome and the wide arc of Fisherman's Beach. The centre, the marina and the day's restaurants are all a short walk downhill, then a slow climb back for the evening.
