Inside, the rooms share the same plain vocabulary: tiled floors, walls kept beige, a flat-screen television, a private bathroom with a hairdryer by the sink. There are five of them, which is few enough that the outdoor pool rarely has more than one towel on each side of it. There is a bar for the evening and a games room with a billiards table for the hour after dinner when nobody wants to go upstairs yet. A golf course sits close enough to fill a morning, and the car does the rest: parking is free, and so is the wifi, if you want to check nothing while you're here.

The pool is the heart of the house, a generous rectangle of blue tile edged in warm terracotta paving, open all year and lined with loungers under white parasols. Sofas of woven rattan sit in the shade at one end, and the bar sends out cold drinks and light lunches, so the terrace fills slowly through the morning and empties late.
Behind the balustraded balconies the rooms stay cool and uncluttered: twin beds with woven headboards, crisp white bedding, tiled or parquet floors and air conditioning against the Algarve summer. Many look onto the pool terrace or out to the green countryside, and French doors open some of them straight onto a shared sun deck.
