The road north from Funchal loses signal past Boaventura, inside a stretch of Laurissilva forest twenty-five million years old; at the end of it is a vineyard that sat abandoned two decades before anyone thought to save it. Terrabona Nature & Vineyards grew up around that vineyard, on Quinta do Cardo, cork and vine hedging the villas, the sea close enough to hear. Adults only, and a cellar already carrying medals from London. For anyone who wants a week measured in wine glasses and forest quiet, not itineraries.

Grape seed oil turns up everywhere here — pressed from the estate's own harvest, it scents the biosauna steam alongside fresh eucalyptus, then reappears worked into skin during Friday massages. Four villas only, which is why the infinity pool by the vineyard never feels shared, its water run through Hijau stone and a pinch of salt until it reads more like a spring than a pool. The rooms were decorated by the same local artists and artisans who first painted the wine labels, one window opening onto rows of Arnsburger vines, another onto the dark wall of the Laurissilva forest. There is a telescope for the vineyard's own dark sky, and sticks left by the door for the trails behind the house. Maria and Marco, who inherited a vineyard they never asked for, still cook the Monday dinner themselves.

Terrabona Nature & Vineyards sets a minimum age of 18 in its own house rules, written at en.terrabonawine.com, and read there on 11 August 2026. A house whose rule drops below eighteen, or stops naming an age, is taken off HUSH — how every house is checked.

The glass villas

Each villa opens almost entirely to the valley through sliding glass, so morning begins with the vines and the sea rather than a wall. Vertical timber battens filter the light and keep the room private, while the dark stone and warm wood inside echo the terraces outside. Step out and a small lawn, a parasol and a café table wait on the grass, with the water shining far below.

Vines to the sea

Terrabona is a working vineyard first, its rows climbing the Cardo Valley on hand-built stone terraces that have shaped this coast for generations. The grapes become the estate's own wines, poured at tastings for guests, and the valley itself keeps falling until it meets the Atlantic. Roses mark the ends of the rows, and the green mountains stand close on every side.

Our tips

The Thursday white dinner

Dinner moves to the rooftop most Thursdays — a gastronomic menu of Madeira and Portuguese dishes, mostly fish and vegetable cooking, poured against three wines from the Terrabona Família range. Wear white if you have it; when the weather turns, the table simply moves back to the welcome hall.

Monday dinner with Maria and Marco

Maria and Marco host dinner themselves on Monday nights in the welcome hall, a fish-and-vegetarian menu poured against three of the estate's own wines, including a Madeira sweet wine kept for the occasion.

Friday grape seed massages

Booked in one-hour slots from four in the afternoon, the Calhau massage and the body scrub both use grape seed oil pressed on the estate, chosen for what it does for skin rather than as an afterthought. Minimum two people per booking.

Stargazing over the vines

Ask for the telescope and someone will set it up for you; the valley keeps its light low enough that the vineyard rows make a genuine dark-sky spot after dinner. Binoculars and a bird guide sit in the villa for anyone who wakes early instead.
