Praia dos Pescadores drops into the Atlantic at the bottom of a lane in Albufeira's old fishing quarter, and the last building before the sand is this one, renovated top to bottom in recent years. Most of the rooms face Praia dos Pescadores straight on, so the first thing through the window each morning is the beach itself, not a car park or a wall. The restaurant works from what the region grows and lands, Portuguese dishes with a few international plates worked in. The pool sits right above the sand with nothing between it and the Atlantic but a rail, and the spa runs its own list of massages and treatments through the day. Evenings, the bar terrace fills for cocktails and live music, then empties out again. There are seven rooms in total, which is why the pool never turns into a queue for a sunbed.

The pools sit high over Praia dos Pescadores, their glass edges dissolving into a view of parasols, pale sand and open Atlantic below. One deck catches the full sweep of the bay; another, wood-lined and quieter, faces the white roofs of the old town. Between swims there are loungers, sun, and the sound of the sea rising up from the beach.
Inside the building the wellness rooms trade the glare for warm wood and low light. A round jacuzzi bubbles at the centre of a decked floor, a sauna waits behind it, and the treatment list runs to massages meant to be taken slowly. It is the one part of the hotel with no view at all, and none is needed here.
