Ten minutes inland from Tavira's white-sand beaches, the road climbs a southeast-facing hillside until the coastal traffic drops away and the land opens into eight hectares of native garden. At 150 metres up, Quinta das Eirinhas – Jardim de Bonsai keeps four apartments, each with its own covered terrace and a view running from the sierra down to the ocean. The site itself calls this a tranquil environment for adults, kept for two people who want a week with nothing scheduled beyond the walk down to the pond.
The apartments here are generously sized one-bedroom units, each opening straight onto its own covered terrace and, beyond that, onto the garden's native planting. Windows and terraces face southeast, catching the ocean and coastline first, the sierra behind. Just four apartments share the grounds for now — the plan is to grow to twelve in time — which keeps the freshwater pond and the shaded lookout points along the walking trails to yourselves more often than not. The water is filtered by reverse osmosis and checked in a laboratory, the hot water comes off solar panels, and the building carries A+ insulation, so shutters, window placement and natural ventilation do the work that air conditioning would do elsewhere. Paths between the apartments, the parking and the garden are flat and step-free throughout.

Just below the terraces lies the reason the quinta carries a second name. The Jardim de Bonsai is a permanent, open-air exposition of high-quality trees - many of them native species trained and refined over decades - set among shaded seating areas where guests linger. The adjoining studio and nursery is a working one: a qualified technician runs information sessions, courses and workshops on cultivation, training and maintenance, for anyone drawn into the slow world where the trees dictate the rhythm.
Inside, the apartments read as calm, uncluttered country rooms. Ceilings lift to bare pine rafters, clerestory windows pull the Algarve light deep into the space, and a wall of rough local stone anchors the lounge against soft green upholstery and warm wooden floors. Each has its own covered terrace giving directly onto the mediterranean garden, filled with birdsong and a gentle breeze - space enough to spread out, cook, read and do very little for days at a time.
