The road into Ubud thins to a track above a river ravine, where thirty-year-old coconut palms close over the water and four villa suites sit apart from one another, each with its own plunge pool. This is Mandalore Villas. It takes no guests under eighteen, and each suite, along with the two-bedroom Penthouse, is built for one couple at a time. For two people who want a week where the only shared spaces are the trees.
Inside, it's floor-to-ceiling glass, an extra king bed under linen, a soundbar and little else asking for attention. In the Jungle Canopy Suite the window wall dissolves so the infinity pool seems to run straight into the treetops; in the Riverside Suite you fall asleep to the water and wake to mist off the ravine. Four suites only, so no path ever crosses another guest's terrace. Coffee comes from a stocked kitchenette, dinner can be brought to the daybed instead, and the jungle does the rest — birdsong at dawn, the current below through the day. Liz and Gideon, who built the place after years in Balinese hospitality, run it themselves.

Four suites, four moods, one view. The Jungle Canopy suite pushes its pool toward the treetops behind a wall of glass; the Tropical Escape sits elevated among the palms; the Riverside falls asleep to the water below; the Garden Sanctuary tucks into its own walled greenery. Every one holds a private infinity plunge pool, an extra-king bed, a rain shower and a terrace daybed, and takes a maximum of two guests, so the jungle stays yours alone.
There is no dining room to dress for. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are cooked to order and carried to your terrace, your pool or your bed, from a menu that runs from hand-made ravioli and grilled tofu skewers to a pastry chef's cheesecakes and lemon meringue. Book the Chef's Table for a private tasting, arrange a candlelit dinner under the trees, or start the day with a floating breakfast set adrift on your plunge pool.

The signature suite's floor-to-ceiling glass opens straight onto the ravine, and mornings there start with coffee on the daybed as the sun clears the canopy. The infinity pool sits right at the ravine's edge, so the swim before breakfast has only birds for company.
In-villa dining covers every meal, so a full dinner can arrive at your terrace table without a drive into town — even with Ubud's warungs and fine dining a few minutes away.
Seven minutes by car, the stepped green terraces are worth the early start before the tour groups arrive. Back by mid-morning, the plunge pool is exactly as you left it.
Five minutes' walk gets you to one of Ubud's main streets, and ten minutes more by car reaches the central temples and markets. The ravine muffles enough that you'd never guess how close it all is.
