The tarmac gives way to sand track on the northern tip of Zanzibar, where the island narrows toward its last headland. A hundred and fifty metres further on, past low garden walls, the gate opens onto Kai Zanzibar. Three villas, each built around its own pool, sit under a courtyard hung with African art — adults-only, built on slowness rather than spectacle. For two people who want the day to hold nothing but the pool, the tide, and dinner at its edge.

Each villa is built from the same short list of materials: hand-carved wood, woven textiles, unpolished stone, and a pool that curves rather than squares off the terrace. There is no elevator and no need for one — the whole house sits on a single level, each villa opening onto its own garden instead of a corridor. Three villas around the central pool keep it from ever holding more than a handful of people, even at sunset, when you're served dinner at its edge and the kitchen turns local and international dishes into something closer to a private meal than a restaurant one. Reservations run through Ibrahim, who answers on WhatsApp as readily as by email.

Kai Zanzibar Hotel & Spa sets a minimum age of 18 in its own house rules, written at kaizanzibar.com, and read there on 11 August 2026. A house whose rule drops below eighteen, or stops naming an age, is taken off HUSH — how every house is checked.

The private pools

Each villa keeps its own plunge pool, screened by banana trees and reed fencing so the water stays yours alone. Mornings begin with a floating breakfast set adrift on the surface; afternoons drift between the hammock and the shade of the thatch. A larger free-form pool, ringed by palms and lit at dusk, anchors the heart of the resort.

African art, ocean calm

Inside, the villas read like a small gallery. Bold black-and-white canvases and woven wall hangings sit against smooth tadelakt walls, and arched wooden doors open straight onto the garden. The palette stays earthen and quiet, pale plaster, dark timber and natural cloth, a Swahili-modern calm shaped around East African craft.

We stayed here for 3 nights during our trip around the island. The hotel is decorated really well and is very aesthetic which gives a good Zanzibar vibe. Nungwi beach is only a 5 minute walk BUT we personally...

Beautiful property, feels unreal, my only disappointment was they got water from the shower, works for 1 minute and doesn’t work again.. breakfast was lovely, feels like the garden of Eden.

Our tips

The floating breakfast

Breakfast arrives on a tray set out on the pool itself, the sunrise version of a dinner service that runs candlelit after dark. Ask for it before the water is disturbed by anyone else — easy enough, with only three villas sharing the pool.

The hammam before dinner

Kai keeps a Turkish hammam and a full spa menu, worked into the day rather than added to the bill afterward. Take the treatment in the slow hour before the candlelit dinner service starts at the pool's edge.

Nungwi Beach, a few steps out

The sand starts a hundred and fifty metres from the gate, down a lit path that makes the walk back after dark an easy one. It's close enough to reach before your coffee cools, and close enough to leave again without deciding to.

A dhow out to Mnemba Atoll

The concierge arranges sunset dhow cruises, sea walks and whale shark encounters at Mnemba Atoll, along with kite surfing and nights in Stone Town for anyone who wants one. Whichever you choose, you're back at your own pool before the candles are lit for dinner.
