The road to the tip of the Michamvi peninsula gives out about forty-five minutes past Zanzibar's airport, past Paje. What is left is the sound of the ocean, palm trees moving in the wind, and two villas built with no windows at all — only an almost invisible mosquito net between the raised bed and the sky. This is Jua, an adults-only retreat built for a handful of guests at a time. For a couple who wants a week with nothing scheduled and nobody else in the frame.
Inside, there is little separation between room and reef: a king-size bed sits raised at the centre of each villa, cotton sheets and kikoi towels the only softness, and where a wall might be there is instead a fine mosquito net and a near-full view of sea and sky. Off each veranda is a private plunge pool and sunbeds, and a baraza piled with cushions faces the water for whichever hour you want it. Wi-Fi reaches the villa; a hairdryer and mineral water wait in the bathroom; towels and linen are disinfected between stays with an ISO-certified, eco-friendly solution. Just two villas share this stretch of beach, which is why it rarely holds anyone but you. Nigel Firman, who built Jua out of what he calls a passion for Africa, asks only that you leave your shoes at the door.

Each of the four villas is its own small world: a shaded patio, loungers set out on the terrace, and a private plunge pool angled at the horizon so you can lie in the water and watch the reef change colour through the day. Butler-style service means the morning coffee arrives in bed and the day shapes itself around you rather than around a timetable.
A short path drops through the gardens to the retreat's own beach, a broad ribbon of white sand that empties at low tide into shallow, wadeable turquoise. A timber deck reaches out over the coral rock for sundowners, and the calm water inside the reef is made for a slow swim, a kayak, or simply floating and doing nothing at all.

This place is absolutely amazing!! My husband and I stayed here for 5 nights as the final part of our honeymoon. I was excited to come having read some fantastic reviews but it was better than we could have expected....
From the first second we arrived everything was absolutely perfect! Very nice and friendly staff (whoever we met), cozy room with a nice pool, delicious food - this is really a place where dreams become true.

Each villa's veranda holds a baraza heaped with cushions, facing the sea; there's no fixed hour for it, though staff tend to leave you alone with it around sunset. The plunge pool is a few steps further, and it belongs to your villa alone — nobody else swims in it.
Breakfast, sealed and delivered, can come straight to the villa — there's no room to walk to if you'd rather not leave the veranda. Ask for it there instead, cushions at your back and the tide somewhere below.
Everyday errands — an ATM, a shop — are a few minutes north in Paje. Stone Town, with its spice plantations and old quarters, is about forty-five minutes by road, and the same road is a reminder that Jua isn't quite as sealed off as the empty beach suggests: there's building work going on next door, though it doesn't reach the sand or the sound of the water.
June to September is the dry season and Zanzibar's busiest; December to mid-March runs hot and just as full. The short rains of October and November barely keep you indoors, and by June the long rains that close the wet season have passed.
