H Charming Residence & Guest House Dom Manuel I Rooms & prices

Walk a few minutes from the centre of Lagos, toward the beaches the Algarve is known for, and the shopfronts give way to a walled garden and rooms decorated in the manner of the sixteenth century, the age of Vasco da Gama and Pedro Álvares Cabral. Dom Manuel I is adults-only, seven rooms in the guest house, with a pool, a Turkish bath and a sauna a short walk away. For anyone who wants a week with nothing to plan beyond which one to use first.

Every room in the guest house has its own balcony or terrace — some over the pool and garden, others looking toward the city — and the same short list underneath: air conditioning, a minibar, a safe, a kettle for coffee or tea. A few of the rooms sit in Villa Rosa, five minutes' walk from the main house, in a quieter pocket of the grounds, where breakfast is not included but is carried over to the same dining room each morning for an extra charge. Seven rooms altogether, which is why the pool rarely feels shared. The spa boutique next door runs a Turkish bath and a sauna, and the design throughout leans on the same sixteenth-century idea of Portugal that gave the house its name.

Charming Residence & Guest House Dom Manuel I sets a minimum age of 18 in its own house rules, read on 11 August 2026. A house whose rule drops below eighteen, or stops naming an age, is taken off HUSH — how every house is checked.

The painted rooms

Each room is built around a headboard of hand-painted azulejo, the blue-and-white tilework that runs through Portuguese houses, framed by carved wood and a deep accent wall. Wicker chairs sit in the window, curtains filter the southern light, and terracotta tiles keep the floor cool underfoot. Every room opens to a terrace or balcony, and the classic rooms look either over the town or across the pool and garden.

The gardens

Between the two houses the ground climbs through a subtropical garden of palms, ferns and bougainvillea, laced with stone stairways and lit lanterns. Classical statues stand among the greenery and a suit of armour keeps the reception company - the house wears its history openly. Paths lead up to a rooftop sun terrace where curtained daybeds face the distant line of the sea.

Our tips

The Turkish bath and sauna

The spa boutique next door runs a Turkish bath and a sauna, and books massages by request. Go in the afternoon, before the pool empties out for the evening.

Villa Rosa, five minutes away

Some rooms sit in Villa Rosa, a five-minute walk from the main house, each with its own terrace. Breakfast isn't included there — it's taken at the main house instead, for an extra charge — and the site is upfront that nearby construction can be heard from some of these rooms.

Walk into Lagos

The old town of Lagos starts a few minutes on foot from the door, and the beaches the Algarve is known for are within the same easy walk. Go for the afternoon and come back to the guest house for the evening.

A private transfer from Faro

The hotel can arrange a private car from Faro airport, for up to four passengers in one trip or up to eight split across two. Give them your flight number and arrival time when you book it.
