High on a mountain range above Santa Teresa Beach, with green hillside behind and the Pacific below, ten villas stand named for the stones set beneath their foundations. This is Vista del Alma, a family-run resort that takes no guests under eighteen. For anyone who wants mornings on a balcony with no timetable and nothing between them and the ocean but green mountain.
Each villa is built the same way: wood, more wood, and steel, with a high ceiling that gives the interior decoration and woodwork room to breathe. Thirty-nine square metres inside, thirty more on a private balcony facing the ocean below the mountain. The living room holds a kitchen, an espresso machine, a smart TV, and a king-size bed — little else, because the balcony is the real room. Ten villas in total, named after the crystals and stones set beneath their foundations, which keeps the resort from ever feeling crowded. Orna and Sami built it as a family project; the local artist Maayan Revach-Ben Omri painted the walls with scenes of Santa Teresa.

Every villa turns outward to the water. Sliding glass walls fold back until the king bed, the deck and the pool read as one long room open to the sky, and a private plunge pool or jacuzzi sits right at the rail with nothing beyond it but canopy and the Pacific. Mornings begin with coffee from the espresso machine and the sound of surf far below; evenings end in the warm water while the sun drops into the sea.
The resort is built into a steep, jungled slope, so each terrace hangs above the treetops with an uninterrupted line to the horizon. Wooden decks and small outdoor kitchenettes turn the balcony into a room of its own, shaded by thatch and palm, while the coastline of Santa Teresa unspools below in a long pale beach and a reef line of white water. It is a place to sit still and watch the light change over some of the most reliable sunsets in Costa Rica.

Larimar sits highest on the mountainside, with the resort's widest ocean view and a private pool on its own balcony — fifty square metres inside, forty more outside. Take your coffee out there in the morning; the kitchen already has an espresso machine waiting.
Every villa comes with its own kitchen and espresso machine, and breakfast can be brought straight to your door. Skip the walk anywhere and drink your coffee on the balcony instead, mountains behind you and the Pacific in front.
The resort keeps horse riding, fishing, and cycling on hand for the days the balcony isn't enough. Santa Teresa's beach — the stretch the site calls a paradise for surfers — sits downhill from the villas, an easy walk back up when you're done.
