The drive out from San José takes the better part of three hours, longer if you don't fly private to the airstrip outside La Fortuna, until the trees close over the last stretch and the volcano comes into view, still smoking. At the end of the road is one villa with a plunge pool of its own, filled straight from the hot springs the mountain keeps warm, and the rainforest starting up around it — frogs first, then, if you're lucky, a howler monkey. The plunge pool is the reason for the villa: volcanic water, piped straight in, warm at whatever hour you want it. A mosquito net hangs over the bed and a bottle of repellent sits by the door, more habit than necessity. By day the glass gives onto rainforest and, on a clear morning, the smoking cone of Arenal itself. Nayara Springs is adults-only, no guests under eighteen, and its two restaurants, Amor Loco and Mis Amores, are kept for its own guests alone.

Set apart in their own pockets of jungle, the villas open onto a sun deck and a mineral-warm plunge pool ringed by heliconia and fern. A private host looks after each one, breakfast can arrive on the terrace with a view, and the glass doors slide back until the forest, and the occasional visiting sloth, becomes part of the room.
A suspension bridge lit by torches carries you from the lobby across a ravine into the heart of the reserve, where hanging bridges and the Perezoso trail thread through fifteen acres of protected forest. Guides point out toucans and tanagers in the canopy, and after dark the lanterns and the tree frogs take over.
