With only three rooms to fill, the pool out front rarely holds more than a couple of loungers' worth of people, and the fence around it is the only real boundary between the water and the sand. Catch99, the resort's own restaurant, works from whatever the boats brought in that day — tuna steak, sushi, the catch grilled plain — and keeps its elevated deck open into the evening for the sunset and a cocktail after.

Behind each door is a study in Sri Lankan colonial calm: an ebony four-poster crowned with brass, a distressed writing desk, a rain shower behind glass and a private terrace set with a bistro table. Mornings arrive through full-height windows framed in palm and sea; the ocean is the first thing you see and the last sound you hear at night.
The house opens straight onto the sand. A timber deck steps down between screwpine trees to the beach, where Weligama's long, forgiving break has drawn beginner and seasoned surfers alike for years. Fishing boats and stilt fishermen still work the same water at dawn, and the tide sets the pace for the whole day.

The bay in front of the resort is rated one of the easier breaks on the south coast, and the certified instructors here run beginner and intermediate lessons straight off the sand. Stand-up paddleboards and snorkelling trips go out from the same stretch of beach.
The kitchen works the day's catch into sushi and tuna steak, and the elevated deck stays open past dinner for a cocktail as the sun goes down over the water. It's the one meal on this stretch of beach worth building an evening around.
Boats for whale and dolphin watching leave early from Mirissa harbour, a short way along this stretch of coast, arranged through the resort and run seasonally through the year. Sea turtles turn up closer to home, along the Weligama shoreline itself — no boat needed, and you're back at the pool before the heat sets in.
