Three kilometres inland from Tangalle, the road narrows through paddy fields and a scatter of ancient palm and teak before it reaches Wagegoda, the village where Don Hendrick Wickramarathne raised the district's first stone house in the early twentieth century. What was a neglected plot when it was found in 2010 is now Villa Don Hendrick, an adults-only bed and breakfast of two bungalows set in four acres of tropical garden. For anyone who wants a week with nothing scheduled beyond the paddy fields outside the window.
The garden came first: jackfruit, lime, and ancient palm and teak left standing long before anyone thought to build here, four acres of it around the old stone house. An outdoor kitchen, added only recently, sits open to that garden so guests can cook for themselves or watch someone else do it under the same trees. There are two bungalows, which is why breakfast can be carried to whichever table you choose and the infinity pool rarely holds more than one other couple. Nights are quiet enough that the paddy fields outside carry further than the road does. Raf and Harold, who found the place neglected in 2010 and have kept it running for fourteen years since, still do much of the cooking themselves.
Villa Don Hendrick sets a minimum age of 18 in its own house rules, read on 11 August 2026. A house whose rule drops below eighteen, or stops naming an age, is taken off HUSH — how every house is checked.
The infinity pool is the heart of the garden: sixteen metres of green-tiled water surrounded by palms and looking out over the pond, deep enough for a proper swim and calm enough for a long float. Two carved stone heads keep watch from the far edge, and an L-shaped terrace of sun-beds, umbrellas and towels runs alongside it for the drying-off hours.
Each of the three bungalows sits apart in the greenery, private behind its own veranda with a ceiling fan turning overhead. Beds are four-posters draped in mosquito netting and dressed with bold botanical prints against calm white walls; a secretaire, a minibar and a personal safe round out the room. With little between you and the garden's sounds, mornings here arrive gently and unhurried.

The house lists these as things to do from here. Where a line is marked off-site it is not on the property — a dive site, a trail, a stable. That mark is ours, not theirs.
Added only in the past few years, at the edge of the four-acre garden, it's shared cooking space among whoever else is staying. Or hand the evening over to Harold, who still does much of the cooking himself.
Have it carried to the bungalow instead of to the garden tables, and eat it on your own terrace among the jackfruit and lime trees.
Arranged on request, built around whatever the garden and the morning market turned up. Ask a day ahead so there's time to plan it properly.
Canoeing is arranged from the property itself, out into the water around Wagegoda's paddy fields, then back to the pool and a chair in the shade of the garden.
