Amma Erna stands on a sloping, rock-strewn site in the hills above Galle, a three-bedroom villa of concrete, brick and timber that a Belgian architect set into the tropical vegetation rather than on top of it. Cantilevered roofs, high open rooms and cross-ventilation let the southern Sri Lankan air move straight through the house, and the line between inside and out all but disappears. Rented whole and kept for adults, it trades a hotel's bustle for the quiet of your own pool, garden and view.
The three bedrooms are named Nangie, Madoe and Akka after the little, middle and big sister, each a calm concrete room under a naturally ventilated ceiling with a mosquito-net four-poster and full-height glass onto the canopy. Materials stay honest throughout: poured concrete floors, tinted plaster, teak and steel furniture made to the architecture.
Villa Amma Erna sets a minimum age of 18 in its own house rules, read on 11 August 2026. A house whose rule drops below eighteen, or stops naming an age, is taken off HUSH — how every house is checked.
The bedrooms are open, high-ceilinged and stripped back, with polished concrete underfoot, a wide four-poster draped in white mosquito netting, and a run of full-height glass that puts the treetops at eye level. There is no air conditioning to hum over the birdsong; electric fans, deep eaves and the nets do the work, the way the house was designed to be lived in.
Bathing here happens against the jungle. Freestanding tubs sit at the glass in tinted-concrete bathrooms, level with the branches and the birds, a bucket of something cold and a pair of glasses set out on a little teak table. It is the villa's most private corner, and the one guests tend to linger in longest as the afternoon light turns green and gold.

The house lists these as things to do from here. Where a line is marked off-site it is not on the property — a dive site, a trail, a stable. That mark is ours, not theirs.
Amma Erna cooks from an open kitchen, and dinner is a four-course chef's table blending European, Asian and Sri Lankan dishes. The menu shifts with the season and the market, and much of it comes from the villa's own edible garden; tell the chef your likes and any allergies when you arrive.
Mornings start slow with fresh tropical fruit, homemade bread and local spreads, then the day belongs to the pool cut into the rock terrace, the hammock and the garden, with the house yours alone for the length of the stay.
The eighteenth-century Dutch rampart town of Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a short drive from the villa. Its compact grid of ramparts, lanes and small shops is easy to wander on foot for an afternoon.
The reef and beach breaks of Hikkaduwa are up the coast for a morning's surf, while the south-coast whale-watching boats and a safari in Yala National Park are among the day trips the hosts can help arrange.
