Four rooms is the whole of it, which is why the infinity pool rarely holds more than one other couple's reflection. Breakfast can come to the room if you would rather not leave it, and housekeeping calls once a day, less if you say so. Ask, and the kitchen will walk you through a dish before you sit down to it. There's a beach for whoever wants it, bicycles to get there without a car, and a dive centre for the days the sea looks better from underneath. Fishing and canoeing are there too, and a car is waiting at the airport on both ends of the trip.

Each suite is a calm, high-ceilinged room where the material does the talking: honey-coloured teak on the windows and furniture, a long desk and low sofa, a bespoke steel-and-wood shelving wall. Roman blinds and sheer curtains filter the tropical light, and the tall glazed doors give straight onto the lawn, so the greenery and the rice paddies sit just past the glass. Every piece of art inside has a reference to modern Sri Lanka.
The pool is the spine of the house, a straight twenty-five metres of water laid along the courtyard between the suites and the garden wall. It was sited so the water frames the rice field, and the garden was planted around it with hand-picked flowering trees for shade on the deck. At dusk the suites glow amber behind the glass, wall lights wash the render, and the whole courtyard turns still and blue.
