On the cliffs above Mawgan Porth, on Cornwall's north coast, a door opens straight onto the South West Coast Path — headlands, golden sand, wildflowers, sea, before you've set down a bag. The Scarlet Hotel keeps seven rooms, adults only, for anyone who wants a stretch of days with nothing scheduled beyond a surf lesson or a walk.

The Atlantic sets the pace. Scarlet's wellbeing classes run daily and cost nothing extra — yoga and new movement patterns, held to the sound of waves reaching up from the beach below and a few deep breaths of Cornish sea air between poses. There's no set itinerary beyond that: a surf lesson when the swell's right, a craft workshop guided by an instructor working in whichever material the week calls for, or an evening at the cliffside theatre. When you'd rather move under your own power, an electric bike — hired through the hotel's new partnership with Volt — is kept for guests only, for the coast road or the quieter lanes behind it.

Scarlet Hotel sets a minimum age of 18 in its own house rules, written at scarlethotel.co.uk, and read there on 11 August 2026. A house whose rule drops below eighteen, or stops naming an age, is taken off HUSH — how every house is checked.

Rooms facing the sea

The rooms are arranged so that the Atlantic is always in front of you. Behind each door the same calm idea repeats: natural wood, soft coastal colour, and a wall of glass that slides back onto a private balcony or terrace above the beach. Some set a pair of sculptural chairs out at the view, others a deep bath where the light is best. Mornings arrive with the tide coming in; evenings close with the sun going down over the water.

The clifftop spa

Wellness is the heart of the house. The spa gathers a chain of warm and cold rituals along the cliff: saunas and a steam room, a hammam and rhassoul, clifftop hot tubs, and a barrel sauna set into the garden with the cove opening just below. Between them a natural reed-filtered pool holds the deck, its water kept clear by plants rather than chemicals. Daily wellness sessions and bespoke treatments run in a sea-view studio, unhurried and calm.

Our tips

The daily wellbeing class

Scarlet's yoga and movement sessions are complimentary for every guest staying, built for unwinding rather than performance. No booking, no add-on fee — just turn up and let the waves set the tempo.

Surf lessons at Mawgan Porth

The beach is a walk from the front door, and the local surf schools will lend you a wetsuit if the Atlantic runs cooler than you'd like. A couple of hours in the water, then back up the cliff path to the hotel.

Walk the South West Coast Path

The hotel's own door is the trailhead — rugged headlands, wildflowers, and sea in view the whole way. Take the gentler shoreline route or push on to the more demanding stretches of the coast path; either way, you started on it.

Electric bikes with Volt

New this year: electric bike hire, kept for overnight hotel guests only. Take the coast road for a breezy ride or the quieter lanes inland — pedalling home afterwards is entirely optional.
