H Samara Chillout Lodge Rooms & prices

Sámara counts about four thousand people, a stretch of restaurants and bars within a short walk of each other, and Pacific sand at the end of most streets. Samara Chillout Lodge sits inside that town, six rooms around a garden and a pool, run by Liza and Costa, who swapped Canada for this coast after three visits convinced them to stay for good. It takes no guests under eighteen. For anyone who wants their days built around the beach and nothing scheduled before it.

The lodge holds six rooms around a garden and a pool, which is why the pool rarely holds more than a couple of people at once. There's a bar on site and a minimarket for the mornings you don't want to walk anywhere, and the kitchen runs cooking classes for the evenings you do. Massage is on offer for after the surf or the horse riding. Beyond the garden wall, Sámara's shops, banks and restaurants are all within a short walk, in a stretch of Guanacaste counted among the world's five Blue Zones, where people are said to live longest. Liza and Costa run it day to day, the Canadian couple who kept coming back to Costa Rica until they stopped leaving.

Samara Chillout Lodge sets a minimum age of 18 in its own house rules, read on 11 August 2026. A house whose rule drops below eighteen, or stops naming an age, is taken off HUSH — how every house is checked.

In the garden

The lodge is really a garden with rooms folded into it — palms, banana plants and red ginger crowd the pale gravel paths, and quiet corners appear where you least expect them: a curtained daybed here, two hardwood chairs there. It is loud with birdsong rather than traffic, and the resident cats treat the shade as their own. Nothing is more than a barefoot walk from the pool.

The breakfast bar

Breakfast is laid out at an open-sided counter under a timber roof strung with bottle-lamps: tropical fruit, cheeses and cold cuts, eggs and fresh bread, with juice and coffee poured at the long hardwood bar. By evening the same counter becomes the honesty bar, where guests fix a sundowner over lounge music and swap the day's surf and trail stories before the garden goes dark.

The lodge and gardens were exceptionally designed and rooms were modern, bright and airy but maintained a distinctly Costa Rican feel. Hosts/owners were super-friendly and nothing was too much trouble for them; they...

Our tips

Cooking classes at the lodge

The lodge runs its own cooking classes for a fee, alongside massage and a bar and minimarket on site — reasons enough to spend an evening without leaving the garden.

Whale and turtle tours, in season

Dolphin, turtle and whale-watching trips run out of Sámara depending on the season, alongside deep-sea fishing and horse riding, each bookable for a fee through the lodge or in town.

Playa Carillo and Playa Barrigona

Two further beaches lie a short drive up the coast, both quieter than Sámara's own stretch of sand — worth the trip out and back before the bar opens for the evening.

Walk into Sámara for dinner

Supermarkets, banks and a good number of restaurants and bars sit within a short walk of the lodge, in a town of about four thousand people where nothing is far.
