The coast road south of Castiadas gives way to Mediterranean scrub, and a sandy path through it is how you reach La Villa del Re, on Sardinia's southeastern shore at Costa Rei. Long before it took guests, this land was an open prison — no walls, just distance — where people who had broken the rules of society were sent to serve their sentences amid the same untouched nature you'll walk through today. Now it's adults-only, kept for two people who want mornings with nothing scheduled but a swim before breakfast.
Inside, the rooms lean on warm, earthbound tones and natural fabrics — linen against the skin, colours pulled from clay and sea rather than anything printed on. Windows are cut wide enough to hold most of the view: scrub outside, and beyond it the water everything here runs toward. Air conditioning and a smart TV are there if you want them, but the rooms are built to be looked out of, not sat in front of a screen. There are eight of them in total, which is why the private beach below never feels shared with strangers. The Blue Sea Junior Suite goes one step further, with its own outdoor Jacuzzi. Breakfast and dinner both happen at Le Palme, built from whatever the kitchen judged freshest that morning.
La Villa del Re sets a minimum age of 18 in its own house rules, written at lavilladelre.com, and read there on 11 August 2026. A house whose rule drops below eighteen, or stops naming an age, is taken off HUSH — how every house is checked.
At the heart of the garden a broad infinity pool meets the horizon, its far edge dissolving into the same blue as the Mediterranean beyond. Set in greenery and open through the day with a lifeguard on hand, it is the still centre of the house: a place to swim at first light, drift on the surface at noon and watch the sky change over the sea in the late afternoon.
A few steps through the pines lead to the hotel's own stretch of shore, a ribbon of soft white sand lapped by shallow, crystal-clear water and shaded by rows of parasols. Beach service, loungers and complimentary water-sports equipment come with the stay, and the same coastline of granite rocks and hidden coves reaches away toward Villasimius for anyone who wants to wander.

The house lists these as things to do from here. Where a line is marked off-site it is not on the property — a dive site, a trail, a stable. That mark is ours, not theirs.
The path through the scrub ends at a private stretch of white sand with sun loungers, umbrellas and a lifeguard on duty. Pedal boats, canoes and SUP boards are free to take out; for longer, a rubber dinghy with a skipper can be rented by the day.
If one room stands out, it's this one: a private outdoor Jacuzzi on the terrace, and a sea view held in through windows cut wide enough to matter.
The hotel's restaurant works from what's local and in season, its dishes built to be looked at as much as eaten. Breakfast here is included, so there's no reason to rush the first coffee.
Between the beach and the rooms, the outdoor pool runs to the edge of the sea view, and the bar beside it stays open through the afternoon for something cold before you go back down to the sand.
