A few steps from Playa Negra, outside Cahuita, is where La Prometida sits — a leisurely walk from the centre of Puerto Viejo if you want more than sand. Five standalone villas stand apart in their own gardens, each with a private deck and nobody else's window in view. It is adults-only, and the couple who run it greet you at the door, then get out of the way. For anyone who wants a week with nothing scheduled.
Each villa stands alone, around thirty-five square metres of its own — a queen bed under a mosquito net, cotton towels, and a private deck that looks into someone else's patch of jungle, not another guest's window. Two ceiling fans turn over the room for the nights the air conditioning feels like too much machinery for the mood, and there's a laptop-sized safe if you brought work you meant not to think about. Coffee or tea arrives at the door before you've asked for it; breakfast is cooked to order and eaten by the pool while the light is still soft. Five villas only, which is why nobody is waiting for a lounger. Andrea and Francisco built the place themselves, and mostly stay out of the way — unless you want company for a glass of wine.

Sliding doors run the width of each room and fold back to the treetops, so the line between the bed and the jungle all but disappears. Step onto the private deck and the canopy is at eye level: banana leaves, heliconia in flower, the flit of a bird. Inside, a wooden headboard, soft linens and a low bench; outside, a chair angled to catch the green light and the sound of the forest waking.
Breakfast is the pool's morning ritual — fruit cut into bright bowls, fresh juice, oats and good coffee laid out at the water's edge while the day is still cool. The pool itself sits in a walled garden of palms, lit soft green after dark, with loungers and a shaded deck for the hours in between. There is a bar, too, that opens just as the light turns golden and the heat lets go.
