The road out of Uvita climbs for the last stretch, switching back up a ridge until the town below is a scatter of roofs and the Pacific fills the rest of what you can see. At the top, six rooms sit along that ridge in clean lines and glass, built by an architect and a biologist who wanted to try something Costa Rica had not seen before. Kura is adults-only, kept for two people who want the view and nothing scheduled beneath it.
Martin Wells trained as an architect and Alejandra Umaña as a biologist, and together they call the result Tropical Minimalism: flat planes, glass, and native garden left to grow as it likes. The rooms are built along the ridge rather than against it, so the wall that matters is the one that opens, and what reaches you by evening is whatever is left of the sunset over the coast. Six rooms, which is enough to keep the pool and the terrace from ever feeling shared with strangers. It is the same site Martin and Alejandra once meant for an extreme hostel with skateboards and bike trails — until the mountain talked them out of it, one evening, and into this instead.

There are only eight, each one open to the canopy through glass walls that slide back onto a private terrace. Teak, concrete and clean lines set the tone inside; outside, a hammock hangs beside a plunge pool of dark stone, loungers wait under an umbrella, and the rainforest drops away toward the sea. They are designed for two, at canopy level, where toucans pass at eye height and the only schedule is your own.
The main pool runs to a glass edge that seems to spill straight into the valley below, with the whole sweep of Uvita bay laid out beneath it. Mornings are spent here, floating and watching the light move over the water. From May through November this is whale season, when humpbacks migrate through the marine park directly below the hotel, and guests sometimes catch them breaching without ever leaving the pool.
