Burnbank Lodges is a cluster of dark-timber cabins tucked into a birch and oak wood on the bank of the River Spean, a few minutes from the Highland village of Spean Bridge. The site is exclusively for adults, with a minimum age of twenty-one and only two guests to a lodge, so what fills the day is birdsong, the river running past the deck and the quiet of the trees rather than anyone else's holiday. It is an adults-only base for the Great Glen: close to Ben Nevis and Fort William, but private enough to feel like your own patch of woodland.

Each lodge is a permanent timber-framed cabin with a tiled roof, built for two. Inside there is an open-plan living room and fully equipped kitchen, a comfortable double bedroom and a separate, modern shower room, with a smart television and pine furniture warmed by tartan and wool. Glazed patio doors open straight onto a private balcony or paved patio with an outdoor table, set above either the woodland floor or the river itself.

Burnbank Lodges sets a minimum age of 21 in its own house rules, written at burnbanklodges.co.uk, and read there on 11 August 2026. A house whose rule drops below eighteen, or stops naming an age, is taken off HUSH — how every house is checked.

On the River Spean

The riverside lodges sit right at the water's edge, their decks looking out over the rush of the Spean as it cuts through the trees. In spring the banks flush with red and purple rhododendrons, and the river carries on past the balcony from breakfast coffee to a last glass of wine after dark. It is the kind of setting where the view does the entertaining and the loudest thing you hear is the water.

Inside the lodge

Behind the patio doors, the living space is a single warm room: a sofa and smart television at one end, a fully equipped kitchen at the other, and a small dining table where you can eat looking out at the wood. Off the hallway lie the double bedroom and a bright, separate shower room. Everything is scaled for two, so cooking a slow dinner or curling up out of the Highland weather feels less like self-catering and more like a cabin of your own.

We stayed here for 13 days in a lovely cabin. The cabins are nicely located near the river and are well utilised. Also the location in Schotland is almost ideal. Most of Schotland can be reached by car within 1,5...

Our tips

Dine out on your own deck

Cook in the lodge and carry dinner out to the private balcony or patio, with an outdoor table set over the woodland or the river. Watch for red deer, red squirrels and birds at the feeders while you eat.

Ride the Jacobite steam train

The Jacobite steam train, familiar as the Hogwarts Express, crosses the great curved Glenfinnan Viaduct on its run to Mallaig. It departs from Fort William, about ten miles south of the lodges.

The Commando Memorial

A mile north of Spean Bridge, the bronze Commando Memorial looks out over Ben Nevis and the Nevis range. It is a short, level stop with one of the finest wide views in the Great Glen.

Ben Nevis and Fort William

Fort William, the base for climbing Ben Nevis and walking the Caledonian Canal at Neptune's Staircase, sits roughly ten miles away, so the whole west Highland hill country is within an easy drive.
