Built in 1905, it was rebuilt at the century's end by a single craftsman working room by room, gingko leaves cut into the stained glass over the door. Next door, the Finch Guest House keeps a lighter, Eastlake Victorian temper. The inn takes no guests under eighteen — for anyone who wants to walk to dinner and not drive again until they leave.
Inside, the Craftsman rooms keep to stone, dark wood and period fabric — a river-rock hearth, exposed rafter tails, fine woods worked by Scott Warren, the craftsman who rebuilt the place and made every piece of furniture in it by hand. Gingko leaves cut into the stained glass of the entry doors echo the gingko tree in the front yard. Next door, the Finch Guest House trades that darker Craftsman mood for high ceilings, bright rooms and painted Eastlake Victorian woodwork. Twenty-two rooms across the two houses, which keeps the porch and the living room from ever feeling like a hotel lobby. Breakfast is plated and brought to you at 8:30 or 9:15, and by afternoon there is wine, tea and hors d'oeuvres waiting in the same room.

Breakfast here is plated, not buffet, served in the Living Room at one of two seatings. By afternoon the same room fills again for wine, tea and hors d'oeuvres, with cookies baked that day left out for whoever wants one.
The inn sits close enough to downtown Napa that you can walk to the restaurants and tasting rooms without planning it — the Riverwalk and the Oxbow District are both a short walk from the corner of Jefferson and 1st. Come back to the porch afterward; nobody minds if you sit there past dark.
The valley's wineries are a short drive north, not a walk — Yountville first, then St. Helena a little further on. Head back into town by evening; the porch and the fireplace are the better place to end the day.
