At the tip of north-west Skye, past the last turning before Neist Point, the tarmac runs out into cliff and croft land, under skies dark enough to lose the Milky Way in whatever else is up there. Glendale lies in one of the darkest corners of the United Kingdom, a pocket of true dark sky where the Milky Way arches clear of any town glow and, on the right winter nights, the northern lights burn pink and green above the cabins. There is no need to travel for the show — you can watch it from the deck, or from bed through the glass, with the loch lying black and still below.

Nobody mows this one on purpose — it's left rough for the butterflies and bees. Sea eagles, golden eagles and deer turn up on the far slope, and dolphins and basking sharks are sometimes visible along the coast below.
Local fishermen sell the day's catch straight from the nearby pier — worth a walk down before you settle on dinner. When you'd rather not cook, the Three Chimneys is a short drive from the retreat.
Two miles down the road is Neist Point, with a car park at the start of the walk out to the lighthouse and its cliffs. Come back to the balcony once the light's gone.
Dunvegan has the shops, Dunvegan Castle and the Coral Beach, if you want a full day away from the retreat rather than a walk. A car is worth having — there's little on this stretch of Skye you can reach on foot.
