The Waggon & Horses

York's streets give way, eventually, to a pub with its own front door and eight rooms above the bar: The Waggon & Horses. Downstairs there's a dartboard and the big match on when there's one worth watching; out back, a garden with furniture set out for whoever wants the last of the light. It takes no guests under eighteen. For two people who want a proper local within a short walk of the bed, and nothing more organised than that.

Eight rooms sit above a working pub, which keeps the whole place small enough that the bar downstairs never turns into a crowd. There's a dartboard up most nights and a screen for the live match when there's one worth having on; for anyone who wants the quiet version, the shared lounge has its own television, away from the noise. Outside, a garden is set with outdoor furniture, catching whatever light York gets. There's a meeting room too, for the trip that's really a trip for work, and luggage storage for the gap between checking out and the train. Parking is free, wifi reaches every room, and the whole building, bar included, is non-smoking.
