The building is Edwardian, and the rooms vary in size room to room rather than following a template — the Superior rooms sit on the top floor, bathroom up a few steps on a mezzanine, one with a bath, one with only a shower. Seven rooms in total, which is why there is no lobby to speak of — instead, a desk, a wardrobe, a kettle, and Anyah's vegan, eco-friendly toiletries by the basin. Every room keeps a King or Superking bed, free wifi, and a telephone. There is no restaurant on site — breakfast happens two minutes away, at The Garden, the group's restaurant with its own courtyard and conservatory.

Very pleasant stay. Staff helpful and friendly. Good freshly cooked breakfast on site and very nice restaurants in sister hotel around the corner. Only downside was bath only which we knew but no shower head on taps.
Very pleasant hotel, 10 minutes walk from waterfront and local restaurants. Immediate area not appealing but the hotel compensates for this. Breakfast choices were good and freshly cooked.

Only the Superior King Room with Bath has one: a mezzanine bathroom reached by its own short run of steps, on the top floor of the house. Ask for it if what you want at the end of the day is a bath, not just a shower.
Two minutes' walk away, the group's restaurant runs a wood-fired pizza oven and an open grill around a courtyard, a conservatory and a cocktail bar. It gets busy, so book ahead, and there's a vegan and gluten-free menu if you need one.
Ten minutes from Southsea seafront by hovercraft, worth a full day if the tide and the forecast hold. Back in Portsmouth there's the Historic Dockyard, the Mary Rose Museum and the D-Day Museum to fill what's left of it, then a quiet room and a two-minute walk to dinner.
Every room takes dogs, for £15 a stay — bring a blanket or bed for the floor and let the hotel know in advance. Dogs are welcome at breakfast too, in a dog-friendly part of The Garden's restaurant or garden, and rooms are cleaned thoroughly afterwards for guests with allergies.
