A late Victorian villa with its own garden sits close enough to Hereford's streets to reach on foot; behind its front door there's a fire lit in the lounge and, upstairs, rooms each with their own en-suite, a writing desk and a view over the garden. Somerville House is an adults-only (18+) house, kept for two people who want Hay-on-Wye and the Brecon Beacons by day and an empty evening by the fire, with no children underfoot.

Inside, rooms range from small and characterful to the largest at the front of the house, but each is dressed the same way: Egyptian cotton on the bed, original art on the wall, and a mini bar stocked at local prices with Herefordshire cider, apple juice and Tyrrells crisps rather than the usual imported miniatures. The largest rooms add a roll-top bath alongside the shower; room 12, on the lower ground floor, trades its view for smaller windows and a quieter corner of the house. Twelve rooms only, which is why breakfast is cooked to the hour you actually want it, not the one printed on a card — ask for the Aberdeen kippers, or the Herefordshire sausage and Hereford-cured bacon, and either arrives with local free-range eggs done however you like them.

Somerville House sets a minimum age of 18 in its own house rules, read on 24 August 2026. A house whose rule drops below eighteen, or stops naming an age, is taken off HUSH — how every house is checked.

Our tips

The roll-top bath rooms

The largest rooms carry a roll-top bath as well as a shower, and a mini bar of Herefordshire cider, wine and Tyrrells crisps priced to make you actually try them rather than save them for the bill.

Breakfast to your own clock

The dining room usually runs 7.30–9am on weekdays and closer to 8.30–10am at weekends, but say what time suits and it moves. Try the Herefordshire sausage and Hereford-cured bacon, or ask for the Aberdeen kippers, which regulars order by name.

The fire in the lounge

Evenings settle in the lounge, where the fire is lit and the garden goes dark beyond it. There's a shared TV room too, but the armchairs by the fire are the ones worth claiming first.

Hay-on-Wye and the Beacons

Somerville House is close enough to Hay-on-Wye's bookshops, the Malverns, the Forest of Dean and the Brecon Beacons to make any of them a day out, with Wales itself within reach — and the fire and a made-up bed waiting back in Hereford.
