Inside, Shinichi Ogawa's architecture keeps to white — walls, glass, generous empty space, and enough restraint that daylight does most of the decorating. There are eleven rooms in the building, one to a floor, so the corridor outside your door belongs to no one else and the lift works more like a private staircase. In the top-floor Bollinger Room the glass runs along three sides, so the city comes back differently by daylight and after dark. The bath below holds one steady temperature at any hour, and beside it sits a set of bath products pressed from grape skins left over from a Hokkaido winery.

Two floors down, a hinoki counter seats ten for AWA Sushi, where each course is poured a glass from a cellar of more than two hundred Champagnes. The pairing is the whole point of the room: the umami of the fish and the acidity of the wine sharpening one another, piece after piece, deep into a slow Osaka evening.

Dotonbori's lit canal and food stalls, and the record shops and murals of Amerika-mura, are both close enough to reach on foot, with the modern buildings lining Midosuji on the way if you take that route. Either walk ends the same way, back up to a floor that is yours alone.
