Walk past Port Authority and the Theater District marquees, and the doors that look like just another lobby entrance lead somewhere quieter: Interfaith Retreats, a single floor of individual retreat cubicles run as a faith-based outreach project. Each cubicle is one platform bed, a shelf, a locking door, walls stopping short of the ceiling. It takes no guests under eighteen, and it's kept for clergy, hospital visitors, students and travelers who want a bed and nothing asked of them but quiet.
Inside, everything is close and plain: a platform bed seventy-five inches long, a bedside desk, a shelf, a power outlet, luggage storage tucked underneath, the room nicely air-conditioned. Twenty-five cubicles share a floor, which is why the walls stop short of the ceiling instead of reaching it — sound is the trade for a door that locks. Quiet hours run 8:30pm to 8:30am, and the house means it: a guest whose snoring carries is woken, and a stay that keeps disrupting the floor can be ended. Down the hall, a shared bathroom keeps private shower cabins, private toilets and sinks, body wash and soap provided, kept clean and tidy. The common lounge runs a breakfast counter, a fridge, a microwave, a toaster and a water dispenser around the clock — no stove, no sink, nothing to cook with, only to eat.
Interfaith Retreats sets a minimum age of 18 in its own house rules, written at interfaithretreats.com, and read there on 20 August 2026. A house whose rule drops below eighteen, or stops naming an age, is taken off HUSH — how every house is checked.
Sound is the house's main preoccupation, because the cubicle walls are open at the top. Guests are asked to keep phone conversations to a minimum at any hour, and between 8.30pm and 8.30am no talking or noise is permitted at all. The property also states, without softening it, that people who snore are not a good fit: if snoring is keeping others awake, staff will wake the guest, and the stay may be discontinued at their discretion. That is worth reading before you book rather than after. Reception is staffed around the clock and there is no curfew, so a late arrival is fine - it just has to be a silent one.
Everything except the cubicle itself is shared. The communal bathroom has private shower cabins, private toilets and sinks, kept clean, with body and hair wash and hand soap provided. The lounge is also the breakfast area: a counter open twenty-four hours, a refrigerator, a microwave, a toaster and a dispenser for filtered hot, cold and room-temperature water - but no stove and no sink, so this is reheating rather than cooking. The whole building is strictly vegetarian and no meat, fish or egg products may be brought in, though milk, cheese and yoghurt are welcome. Alcohol, smoking and vaping are out everywhere, pets and emotional support animals are not accepted, and bicycles, e-bikes and scooters may not come inside at all.
The retreat is run as an outreach project, and a stay pays for it. Interfaith Community Services has handed out free hot vegetarian meals in Tompkins Square Park every Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 9.30am for twenty-five years, from the southwest corner on Avenue A, without missing a serve-out through 9/11, the blackout, Hurricane Sandy and Covid. Guests are invited to do more than fund it: volunteers meet at the kitchen at 124 East 4th Street at 8.45am on those mornings and work from preparation through to serving. That is the plainest answer to why this house exists, and why its rules read the way they do.

The counter in the common lounge runs day and night: a fridge, a microwave, a toaster, and a dispenser for filtered water hot, cold or room temperature. There's no stove and no sink, so whatever you bring back gets reheated or toasted, not cooked from scratch.
Luggage drop-off before the 3pm check-in and storage after the 11am check-out both cost nothing, so a red-eye landing at JFK or a last flight out of LaGuardia doesn't mean carrying a bag around Midtown all day.
Interfaith Community, the project behind the cubicles, has handed out free hot vegetarian meals in Tompkins Square Park every Monday, Wednesday and Friday for twenty-five years running, without missing a serve-out. Guests are invited to help: arrive at 124 East 4th Street by 8:45am, prep and serve until 9:30, then head back to a quiet cubicle for the rest of the day.
The rule here isn't a white-noise machine — it's a schedule. Talking is asked to a bare minimum in the cubicle and common areas from 8:30pm to 8:30am, and because the walls don't reach the ceiling, it's enforced: a guest whose snoring keeps others up gets woken, more than once if needed.
