On a quiet residential street in Savannah's Historic District, a few streets from Forsyth Park, two townhouses built in 1876 stand joined behind what is recognised as the longest contiguous porch in the city. This is Bellwether House, twenty-three rooms behind High Victorian Italianate brickwork, adults-only, restored and reopened in 2021 after decades as private homes and, for a while, a physician's office. For anyone who wants Savannah without having to leave a residential street to find it.
The house dates its brickwork to 1876, when merchants Samuel Palmer and Henry Dresser built adjoining townhomes on this street, and the Italianate details survive in the ironwork, the tall windows, and the porch that runs the length of the façade — longer, by the house's own account, than any other in Savannah. Inside, the restoration kept the proportions of two nineteenth-century homes joined into one: high ceilings, deep windows, the kind of light Savannah's oaks filter rather than block. There are twenty-three rooms, which is why afternoon tea in the parlour still feels like a house gathering rather than a hotel seating. The porch is where the day tends to end.

Tea is served daily in the parlour, a pause built into the day rather than an extra booking. Before dinner out, there is a sparkling wine toast, and on some evenings an in-house cocktail class starts the night before you have even left the building.
Forsyth Park and the oak-lined squares of the Historic District are close enough to reach on foot, along with the shops on Broughton Street and City Market. It is an easy loop out and back to the porch.
