It is kept for anyone who wants Cheshire without a schedule — a pub two minutes off, and the Bridgewater Canal three minutes the other way.
Inside, the rooms are the kind furnished for staying rather than passing through: crisp cotton sheets, a chaise longue or a Chesterfield sofa, dressing tables set under the windows for late reading. Every bedroom looks out over the back garden and the National Trust woods beyond it, or the front lawn and the farmland past the hedge. Downstairs, two wood burners carry the house through winter — one in the residents' lounge, one in the breakfast room — and in summer the terrace takes over, licensed for a glass of wine while the light goes. Eggs come from the Dunham Massey farm down the lane, the sausages from Bury Market, the black pudding too — order the chilli version if you want it, or the vegetarian if you don't. Gluten-free bread and black pudding are both on request.
Out through the front gate, past the pub, it is seven minutes down the lane to the deer park. Walk it before dark and be back for a fire lit in the residents' lounge.
Turn right out of the farm instead of left and within three minutes you are on the towpath, narrowboats moored along it and ducks that expect to be fed. Good for the twenty minutes before breakfast.
