Above Berry, past the last of the green pastures, the road climbs onto 360 acres of farmland and native bush on Dharawal land — hills that run out to a distant line of ocean. At the top of it: Mt Hay Retreat, two suites built for exactly this, and nobody else in the frame. It takes no guests under eighteen. For anyone who wants a week where the only plan is which direction to walk.

There are two suites at Mt Hay Retreat, which is as many as the pool, the swing and the trails have to share. Each is individually designed, built around a window wall that opens onto rolling green hills running to a line of ocean on the horizon, with natural light reaching every corner of the room. Outside, the 360 acres are still worked as a farm — kitchen gardens and fruit trees planted to the seasons, walking trails that thread past hidden glades and tranquil dams, and a giant chess set set out for whoever wants a slow afternoon. The heated pool runs 33 metres indoors, lap end to spa end, and past the tree line a swing — Mt Hay calls it the Cloud Swing — hangs out over the valley. Anthony and Louise created it, and it's theirs.

Mt Hay Retreat sets a minimum age of 18 in its own house rules, read on 24 August 2026. A house whose rule drops below eighteen, or stops naming an age, is taken off HUSH — how every house is checked.

Luckily we travelled in a 4WD as the road up to the retreat is quite steep and ruff in places. It's both bitumen and gravel. However all that is forgotten once you reach the top. It truely was like the rest of the...

Our tips

The Cloud Swing

Past the walking trails, hidden glades and dams, the ground opens out and the Cloud Swing hangs over the valley, with the same run of hills and ocean horizon that fills the suites. There's no schedule for it — go when the light's doing something worth watching.

The kitchen garden

Fruit trees and kitchen gardens are worked into the grounds and planted to the seasons rather than a fixed menu. Walk past them on the way to the pool and you'll see what's actually in the ground that week.

Berry Village

Berry's Village is a few minutes down the hill by car — Mt Hay's own description calls it the beating heart of the town. Go for the afternoon and come back to 360 acres with nobody else in the frame.

The 33-metre pool

The heated pool runs the full 33 metres indoors, with the spa alongside it for afterwards. Two suites means you're rarely sharing either.
