In the centre of Grassington, in the grounds of a house behind a walled garden, is a nineteenth-century cottage with its own front door and, unusually for a town centre, its own free parking. The house is Ashfield House, which holds seven rooms in total; the cottage is two of its own, entirely to yourselves. It takes no children under twelve and no dogs — a week with nothing scheduled, just the two of you.

Downstairs is one big room built around an inglenook fireplace, plus a separate dining room and a kitchen stocked for a full week's cooking rather than a weekend's. Up a flight, the first bedroom has a king bed and its own ensuite with a bath and a walk-in shower; up another, a second bedroom converts between twin beds and a super king, with a house bathroom next door and its own walk-in shower. The staircase is original to the building and steep with it — the cottage says plainly it does not suit anyone unsteady on their feet. Self-catering is the plan, but Ashfield House itself, through the garden, will do you breakfast if you would rather not cook it.

Ashfield House sets a minimum age of 18 in its own house rules, read on 25 August 2026. A house whose rule drops below eighteen, or stops naming an age, is taken off HUSH — how every house is checked.

Everything was wonderful. The room we booked was small but extremely clean, comfortable and welcoming. Perfectly clean bathroom, a wonderful view of the garden, very good breakfast and secured parking space....

Great location in the heart of the village, yet secluded and quiet. The room was spacious as was our bathroom. Spare tea and coffee etc readily available. Breakfast was excellent.

Our tips

The inglenook fireplace

The ground-floor lounge is built around an inglenook fireplace big enough to warm the whole room on its own. Light it in the evening and the sofa opposite becomes the only seat worth having.

Breakfast up at the House

The cottage is self-catering, but Ashfield House is a few steps away through the walled garden, and breakfast there is yours to arrange instead of cooking your own.

The walled garden and free parking

Free parking and a private walled garden come with the cottage, both unusual for an address in the centre of a Dales town. Park the car for the week and leave it there.

Mind the stairs

This is a nineteenth-century cottage and the staircase is original: steep and narrow, and not something the house recommends for anyone with mobility concerns. Worth knowing before you book if it applies to your party.
