H Akohara Buahan Village Retreat Rooms & prices

The road up to Buahan climbs past Museum Puri Lukisan and into jungle canopy that eventually sinks below the windows instead of hanging over them. At the top of it: five pool villas cut into the contour of the valley, and the name on the gate is Akohara Buahan Village Retreat. It takes no guests under eighteen. For two people who want nothing scheduled beyond the shuttle times and which pool to swim before breakfast.

Each villa takes its name from a Balinese element, and its finish from it: Pertiwi's walls mix concrete with soil under an alang-alang thatched roof; Akasa's living room is stone and wood behind floor-to-ceiling windows that pull the valley close enough to touch from the bed. Beds and chairs are dressed in handmade kain tenun weaving, and no two interiors match, since each was given its own mural by one of seven handpicked artists. Five villas only, so the infinity pools stay private and birdsong stays the loudest thing you hear. The bathtubs sit inside the pools themselves, carved stone, angled at the valley rather than at the villa.

Akohara Buahan Village Retreat sets a minimum age of 18 in its own house rules, written at akohara.com, and read there on 11 August 2026. A house whose rule drops below eighteen, or stops naming an age, is taken off HUSH — how every house is checked.

The pool villas

Set across seven vertical tiers, each of the twenty-eight villas carries its own private pool with an integrated bathtub and a wide, unbroken view of the valley. Some are circular, crowned with thatch and ringed in glass so the forest sits at eye level; others open to a living pavilion and a small garden. Contemporary comfort is tucked quietly inside handmade bamboo and wood.

Rituals in the trees

The retreat takes its shape from two Balinese ideas - Panca Mahabhuta, the five great elements, and Panca Indria, the harmony of the five senses. At the Hara wellness house that becomes yoga on an open deck among the trees, unhurried spa treatments, and long soaks in petal-strewn baths poised above the forest floor. Days here are built around slowing down rather than filling up.

Our tips

The hammock beneath Bayu's bedroom

Bayu is built as a duplex above the jungle canopy: the bedroom conceals its own private pool and a swinging hammock net underneath, so you don't leave the room to reach either. Beds here are dressed in vibrant ceremonial Balinese fabrics.

Breakfast, à la carte, at your villa

Breakfast is unlimited and cooked to order, served in the villa if you'd rather not leave the pool deck. Afternoon tea comes daily too, and the mini bar is quietly restocked each day.

The 7am shuttle to Ubud

The resort's own shuttle leaves at seven, stopping at Museum Puri Lukisan on the way into Ubud, then runs back out at eleven, two and five. Take the early one and you're back for the two o'clock, in plenty of time for the daily afternoon tea.

Two included activities a day

Every stay carries two complimentary retreat and cultural activities each day, on top of a welcome massage the day you arrive and a welcome drink with a flower garland at the door.
