The road into Positano turns right at the centre, and eight hundred metres on, behind a screen of green plants, an eighteenth-century building holds twelve rooms with their own view of the sea. This is Villa Yiara. White walls, yellow shutters, a terrace or a balcony off nearly every door. It takes no guests under eighteen. For anyone who wants coffee above the rooftops and nothing scheduled after that.
Inside, the house keeps the palette it chose for itself: white walls, yellow trim, plants at the corners of the terraces, meant to slow you down before the bag is off your shoulder. Every room finds the water somehow — a Standard room with an Italian-style shower and its own sea-view terrace, a Suite that opens into one long room with a jetted shower, a handful of others with a balcony jacuzzi built right into the view. Twelve rooms in total, which is why no terrace ever feels borrowed. Breakfast is room service here, a tray brought up rather than a dining room to get dressed for.
