The villa is air-conditioned, floors and walls kept plain so the sea does the talking through a wall of glass on the private terrace. Sleep in the one bedroom, wake to the rain shower and the toiletries left by the sink, then step past the kitchen's Nespresso machine and fridge to the terrace, where the jacuzzi holds the same sea view all day. There is one villa here, not a wing of them, so the outdoor pool and the private beach area are never a queue. Breakfast is continental or American, laid at the beachfront restaurant between eight and ten, after which the day is yours to spend on a kayak through the mangroves or nowhere at all.

The villas read as calm, pale rooms that open almost entirely to the bay. Inside there is a fully equipped kitchen, a Nespresso machine and a flat-screen with satellite channels, but the design keeps pulling your eye outward, past the palms to the islands offshore.
Down at the shoreline the long pool runs parallel to the beach, its far edge dissolving into Phang Nga Bay. Timber loungers and low umbrellas line the deck, and when the sun drops behind the coconut palms the whole surface turns to copper and violet. It is the gathering point of the retreat, close enough to the sand that you can move from pool to sea in a few barefoot steps.
