Mexico's Highway 307 runs along the Laguna de Bacalar, and at kilometre 27 the road hands you over to the jungle: eight private cabins, spaced apart inside the selva, the closest of them twenty metres from the water. Aurea Bacalar takes no guests under eighteen and keeps the lagoon — the Laguna de los Siete Colores, for the blues it shifts through — as the only real view. Rooms are built around what's outside them. The garden-facing cabins keep it simple — air conditioning, a kitchenette, a shower open straight to the sky — while the ones closer to the lagoon add a private terrace, a ceiling fan, a minibar and finishes drawn from Maya design, with the water partly in view from twenty metres off. The Suite is the one built for the lagoon itself: panoramic views and decoration pulled from pre-Hispanic motifs. Eight cabins in total, which is why none of them looks into another's window. Between them sits a Japanese garden, and a charcoal grill for whoever wants dinner outside rather than at the coffee shop on site.
