In the old heart of Larnaca, a few minutes on foot from the Finikoudes seafront, 9 Muses is a small adults-only house that takes the nine muses of Greek myth as its theme. Eight rooms, a stone-walled breakfast room and a rooftop bar sit above the lanes near Saint Lazarus, and the whole place is kept for adults by its own house rule — children cannot be accommodated, so the mood stays quiet and unhurried.
Each room carries a muse's name and a wall of gilt-framed classical paintings above a deep buttoned headboard, with baroque gold mirrors, hardwood floors and shuttered windows onto the street. Air-conditioning, satellite television and a compact writing desk come as standard; some rooms open onto a small wrought-iron balcony.

The bedrooms are the point of the house. A tufted headboard runs the width of each wall, hung with gold-framed prints of the muses and lit by slim pendant lamps; a carved gilt console and an ornate mirror stand opposite. White linen and shuttered windows keep the rooms cool and calm, and the antique-gold detailing gives each one the feel of a private salon rather than a standard hotel room.
Breakfast is served on the ground floor, in a room where a rough limestone wall meets patterned floor tiles and a deep-blue serving counter. Simple wooden chairs gather around dark tables, coffee and cooked plates come out from the kitchen, and the folding doors open to let the morning light in. It is an easy, informal start to the day before the walk down to the promenade.
